Resilience In Psychology Resilience means the ability in people to bounce back from adversity. In the book The Handbook of Positive Psychology , Shane Lopez and Charles “Rick” Snyder write what they found in their research on children over four decades — that resilience is “positive adaptation during or following significant adversity or risk.”
Objective: Mindfulness interventions have been shown to reduce stress; however, the mechanisms driving stress resilience effects are not known. Mindfulness interventions aim to teach individuals how to: (a) use attention to monitor present moment experiences; with (b) an attitude of acceptance and equanimity. What exactly is it that underpins a person’s inner resilience? In the search for an answer, we turn to the findings of trauma research, a field of study that deals empirically with our ability to bounce back from life’s most challenging moments.
