Santorini is a Greek wine region located on the archipelago of Santorini in the southern Cyclades islands of Greece.Wine has been produced there since ancient times, but it was during the Middle Ages that the wine of Santorini became famous worldwide under the influence of the Republic of Venice.

The choices are plentiful, and I am very glad I chose Gavalas Winery during my stay on the island. Our visit was during the low season in October, and it was relatively easy to book a table here. We tried a few assyrtiko wines (blue bottle, naturally fermented, nychteri) a couple of rarer wines (a red - mavrotragano, and a white - katsano), and a sweet vinsento.
